Current Status of Programs and Courses based on planning as of December 15, 2006
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Riverside School for the Arts Project of the Riverside
Community College District will offer a unique project-based, arts-centered educational
experience for community college students and qualified, concurrently enrolled
high school students. Through its educational partnerships with the University
of California, Riverside; the University of Redlands; La Sierra University; and the
Riverside Unified School District; RSA’s federal grant will support faculty as they develop new
courses and programs and revise the methods of teaching existing community college
and high school courses.
DEGREES
RSA will award associate
degrees and certificates designed for the arts and entertainment industries.
The educational partners will award degrees and/or diplomas appropriate to
their institutions. We expect to be joined by numerous business and industry
partnerships before the Phase One building opens in 2008.
NEW COURSES
The Riverside City campus faculty are working on courses in English (screenwriting,
play writing), music, dance, visual arts and design, technical theatre, photography,
and all areas of telecommunications. Faculty at the Norco campus are working
on course modifications and/or new courses in humanities, “creativity and
imagination,” and art.
PARTNERSHIPS
With the inclusion of courses in business, the so-called “enterprise
of the arts,” such as marketing, advertising and finance, RSA’s
curriculum model will begin to take the shape it will ultimately have. The
University of Redlands and La Sierra University have expressed a strong interest
in focusing on “music business,” “music technology,” and
other business-related degree programs.
Riverside Unified School District plans to discuss implementation of RSA’s
project-based educational experiences at their magnet performing arts high school.
